Instead of waiting for a voice command, it's designed to anticipate what you need based on your goals, routines, and schedule: surfacing travel information before a trip, prepping relevant context ahead of a meeting, and placing that information directly in your field of view without you having to ask. This is the more genuinely interesting bet in the product, and also the harder one to get right. Reactive AI assistants fail gracefully — if a voice command is misunderstood, you just try again. Proactive assistants fail loudly, by surfacing the wrong thing at the wrong moment, or by feeling like they're guessing at your intentions instead of helping. Every AR wearable with an AI layer has essentially the same unsolved problem: proactive is more impressive when it works and more annoying when it doesn't, and there's no way to average those two outcomes into "pretty good."

It's priced well above what would tempt a curious mainstream buyer and closer to what a developer, enterprise pilot program, or genuine early-adopter would pay to get real-world experience with standalone AR before the category matures. That's a defensible strategy — it avoids flooding the market with units that generate bad reviews from people who were never the target buyer for a first-generation wearable. But it also means Snap Specs' actual test of product-market fit is happening with a much smaller, more forgiving audience than the AR-glasses conversation online might suggest.

The interesting question isn't whether Snap Specs are good today — first-generation standalone AR hardware from anyone is going to have exactly these rough edges.
